NY NEW LEBANON — The Town Board of New Lebanon voted 3-1 to solicit competitive bids for a highway backhoe after the existing equipment failed to perform during emergency situations. Supervisor Colleen Teal, Councilmembers Dan Evans and Mark Baumli supported the bid process while Councilmember Kevin Smith Sr opposed it; an initial direct-purchase proposal had failed 2-2. Highway Superintendent Jeffrey Winestock warned that the current backhoe, which has over 2,000 hours of operation and chronic electrical failures, is irreplaceable during spring storms and could cost the town hundreds of thousands of dollars in road repairs if unavailable.

The board also unanimously approved soliciting new bids for tennis court reconstruction and resurfacing, expecting lower material costs than the 2015 quotes of $85,620 to $86,180.
